Last summer Kate Dawkins invited me to design some scenes for the The 75th anniversary of VJ Day event for the BBC. A live performance with projection mapping across the whole of Horse Guards Parade and the Old Admiralty. 227 x 36m to cover!
A favourite moment was definitely hanging knickers across the Old Admiralty. I also created atmospheric smokey scenes to accompany the handwritten poem a POW sent home from what was then Burma. Recited by a serving soldier, a wonderful opportunity.
This was the one of the last large scale projections I designed before my 97 year old Nana, Nancy Myra, passed away in Liverpool. I remember her singing along to Vera Lynn songs in her singsong lilting scouse accent. Though her dementia had already taken her away, i felt we were connected again as I made this piece. She was an amazing painter from a humble background. It was also a chance to reflect on what my granddads went through fighting for so long thousands of miles away from their homes in Liverpool and Scotland. We live in a different world now
