I was invited by Luke Halls studio to lead the design team making projections for the Pan American Games 2019 opening ceremony in Lima, Peru. The show was a Balich Worldwide Shows production led by Creative Director Francisco Negrin.
I saw the project through from conception and mood board stage to final designs and execution, ending up with almost a month in Lima for rehearsals. We projected onto a faceted mountain choreographed into a celebration of Peruvian history and culture, from Pre Inca to the present day. The mountain was a pleasing yet challenging shape to work with, mainly due to the multiple vantage points the broadcast cameras would be catching.
We combined 2D 3D and hand drawn elements to create an eclectic mix of old and new, graphic and organic looks that brought to life the theme.
It was cloudy 100% of the time and the light pollution was insane, our render farm got stuck in customs for 1.5 weeks, I missed the entire British heatwave and experienced a South American invierno in a concrete stadium, but I improved my Spanish and was able to use the entire colour spectrum!
